In early Spring, 2002, the seeds of
the Yamanote-sen Green Map project were planted when Tokyo Art Jungle's
curator, David D'heilly, began talking with journalist Yohei Yasuda
about a wonderful
opportunity: to create a Green Map car on Tokyo's central rail line,
the Yamanote, and an expanded exhibit in the Tokyo International
Forum's soaring atrium. Little did we know how wonderfully the
project would blossom, as interpreted by 40 energetic, thoughtful
university students and the youngsters they mentored during the
Summer. By the time the Green Map exhibits opened in August, the
districts around all 29 stations of the Yamanote had been charted
with great creativity, and interpreted in several formats: as the
world's largest Green Map, as a 150 meter-long photo-montage, within
personality-filled field-notebooks, inside lively station-boxes,
in
terrific videos and on-line in a new interactive website! Under
Yasuda's skillful guidance, the Green Map Kids also prepared for
public contributions, both live and online, adding to the sites
selected for their significance to the environment from a cultural,
social or ecological perspective. The public also enjoyed the World
Green Map exhibit (designed by Masahiro Horiuchi), videos and talks
about the project's myriad outcomes from across the city and around
the world. Congratulations to all the participants, your work gives
us all a fresh, green perspective of Tokyo!! I invite you to explore
the pages of this website and experience the Yamanote-sen Green
Map project for yourself!
