Folklife Festival is the
annual exhibition of the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. In
2002 they featured the Silkroad. The exhibition was wide-ranging,
encompassing the history and heritage of the Silkroad transmission
(e.g., silk products, gold and silver tablewares) as well as contemporary
artifacts.
World-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma called 2dk to work on the section
curation. Curator David d'Heilly focused on the crossover between
the weight of the history of the Silkroad and the Japanese superflat
contemporary art. He also contacted Masahiro Nakagawa of 20471120,
who is active in both art and fashion. In May, Mr. Nakagawa and David
left Japan to travel around the Silkroad. Nakagawa collected cloths
full of memories from the people he had met on the road; June: started
to recycle-remix his own memory of the trip with the memory and the
history within the materials; July: exhibited the fruits of this enterprise
at the Smithsonian. 2dk also planned and produced the fashion show
with runway.
